The Gift of the Spirit — Joel 2:28–32

Alex Hogendoorn – March 15, 2026

Tagline

God pours out his Spirit on his people so that, knowing his presence, the church becomes a prophetic witness calling the world to salvation before the coming Day of the Lord.

Sermon Summary

Joel’s prophecy climaxes with a promise: God will pour out his Spirit on all flesh. Sons and daughters, young and old, servants and free—all will share in the presence of God and in the prophetic task of revealing him to the world. This promise did not appear suddenly; it came after a journey through mourning, fasting, and repentance. Joel teaches that when God’s people return to him with their whole hearts, he restores them and fills them with his Spirit. The promise echoed through Israel’s history—from Moses’ longing that all God’s people would prophesy—to the revivals experienced in earlier generations. Yet Joel also pointed forward to a greater outpouring still to come.

That fulfillment arrived in Jesus Christ. At his baptism the Spirit rested on him permanently, and at the cross the Day of the Lord fell first upon the Son of Man, who bore God’s judgment on behalf of the world. Fifty days later, at Pentecost, the Spirit was poured out on the gathered church just as Joel foretold. Since that day, believers live between the outpouring and the coming Day. The Spirit’s presence means that the church becomes a prophetic community—people who know God, speak of Christ, and call others to repentance and salvation. Every believer participates in this mission, because everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
